What a Road to Hana day trip looks like
The Hana Highway runs 64.4 miles between Kahului and Hana on Hawaii Routes 36 and 360. Hawaii's tourism authority puts Hana 52 miles out and the drive at two to four hours one way, because of 620 curves and 59 bridges, 46 of them one lane wide, where oncoming traffic has to take turns. That is the arithmetic behind the durations on this page: 7 to 12.5 hours, never an afternoon.
Hawaii's official tourism page encourages visitors to travel the road as a permitted guided tour instead of driving it themselves, and the stops explain why. Waianapanapa State Park, the black sand beach at Hana, opens daily 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., requires reservations for both entry and parking, releases them 30 days ahead one day at a time at midnight Hawaii Standard Time, sells no same-day slots and wants everyone inside the gate by 5:30 p.m. Two of the six tours below put that admission in the price.
Departures are early because the gates are early. Hotel pickup on the farm-to-table tour runs between 5:50 and 6:30 a.m., the West Maui van leaves Cannery Mall Lahaina at 6:00 a.m., island guests on the $210 tour meet at 7:00 a.m. at 434 Kahiki St in Kahului, and cruise guests are collected at Kahului Harbor at 8:30 a.m. Twin Falls at mile marker 2 opens its gates at 7:10 a.m. with 55 first-come parking spots, so the vans that leave first are the ones that park there.
Rain comes with the route rather than spoiling it. Hana averages 82.28 inches a year with at least 4 inches in every month, 9.52 in March and 4.08 in June, which keeps the waterfalls running and the trails slick, so wear sturdy hiking shoes. HDOT crews are also a normal part of the day: alternating single-lane closures sit near Waikamoi between mile markers 9.79 and 10, at Keanae between 13.9 and 14.2 and at Wailua between 19.5 and 19.6, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, which is why a tour that quotes 9 to 11 hours can land at the top of its range.
Which one fits you
On a budget or arriving by ship: the Small-Group Adventure with Pickup & Lunch starts from $210 and is the most reviewed tour here, 4.8 ★ across 3642 reviews. Cruise guests get the 8:30 a.m. pickup at Kahului Harbor, island guests meet at 7:00 a.m. at 434 Kahiki St, and the booking needs a minimum of two guests.
Food matters to you: the Farm to Table Adventure, from $259, serves a Hawaiian meal from Hana Farms and covers Waianapanapa State Park admission plus parking fees, in 2023/2024/2025 Mercedes Sprinter vans with door-to-door pickup.
You want the whole coast in one day: the 12.5-hour Hana Coast Day Trip from $277 is the longest option on this page, with a light to-go breakfast, lunch at an organic farm and all admission and park entry fees. Pickup covers specific Maui hotels and not the port.
Staying in West Maui: the Mercedes van tour from $250 collects you at Cannery Mall Lahaina at 6:00 a.m., caps the group at 14 and carries sandwiches, pastries, water and Hawaiian cane juice. There are no special diets on board, so bring your own food if you need one.
Travelling as a family or marking an occasion: the VIP Private Road to Hana Tour, from $599 and rated 5.0 ★ across 1232 reviews, gives you a private vehicle and a route you set, starting at Island Fresh Cafe in Paia with reserved secure parking. Meals are not included.
Comfort above all: the Small-Group Luxury Limo-Van, 10 hours from $385, seats every guest in an individual leather captain's chair with a Hawaii State Certified driver/guide and pickup at a resort, hotel, condo, harbour or private residence. Breakfast and lunch depend on whether you pick the ULTIMATE or the PICNIC option at checkout.
Before you book
- Meeting points vary by tour: Kahului Harbor at 8:30 a.m. for cruise guests and 434 Kahiki St at 7:00 a.m. for island guests on the $210 adventure; outside Starbucks at 120 Ho'okele St, Kahului on the farm-to-table tour; Cannery Mall Lahaina at 6:00 a.m., Maalaea Park & Ride at 6:30 a.m. or Kahului Park & Ride at 6:40 a.m. on the Mercedes van tour; Island Fresh Cafe in Paia on the private tour.
- Pickup is not universal. The Mercedes van tour does not collect in Napili-Honokowai, Kahana, Kapalua, Makawao, Kula or Paia, the 12.5-hour day covers specific Maui hotels only and does not include port pickup, and the luxury limo-van has its own meeting point if you decline pickup and tell the operator in advance.
- Group rules to read first: the $210 adventure takes bookings for a minimum of two guests, the luxury limo-van carries up to eight, and the Mercedes van is capped at 14.
- Meals differ more than prices do. The 12.5-hour trip and the farm-to-table tour include breakfast, lunch and park fees; the Mercedes van has no special diets, raw, vegan or allergy-safe, so bring your own; the private VIP tour includes snacks, soda and bottled water but no meals; on the $210 tour, breakfast cannot be prepared for bookings made after 3:00 p.m. the day before.
- Pack sturdy hiking shoes, a rain layer and a swimsuit. Hana gets at least 4 inches of rain in every month of the year, and NPS warns that East Maui streams can rise 4 feet in 10 minutes, so stay out of the water during heavy rain.
- For sun and bugs, NOAA guidance for Pacific coral favours mineral sunscreen over oxybenzone, octinoxate and octocrylene, plus sun shirts and shade between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Hawaii's health department advises repellent with 20–30% DEET or picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535.
- Gratuities are not included on any of these tours; the operators suggest 15–20%.
- Check the date before you plan the rest of the week. Weekday single-lane closures near Waikamoi, Keanae and Wailua run 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and daylight is finite: at Hana the sun sets about 7:08 p.m. at the summer solstice and about 5:48 p.m. at the winter solstice.
