What the road to hana helicopter tour covers

The tour runs 6 hours and splits into two halves: 3.5 hours of driving in an air-conditioned luxury limo-van with multiple stops, and a 36-minute Eco-Star helicopter flight with live commentary. The van carries six passengers at most, with individual plush seats, large windows and a Hawaii State Certified driver/guide. Entry to Waianapanapa State Park, a Pacific Rim lunch, ice-cold drinks and swim breaks when conditions permit are all included, from $599 per adult, rated 4.9 ★ (841 reviews).

Hawaii's tourism authority puts Hana 52 miles from Kahului and the drive at two to four hours one way, because the Hana Highway holds 620 curves and 59 bridges, 46 of them one lane wide where oncoming traffic takes turns. Those numbers are the reason the full-route day trips on this site run 9 to 12.5 hours. This tour takes a different line: it drives the coastal section as far as Hana, then hands the rest of East Maui to the helicopter, which reaches the waterfalls set back behind the ridges where no road goes. Hawaii's official tourism page encourages visitors to do the road as a permitted guided tour rather than drive it themselves.

Two departure times run the same pieces in a different order. The AM tour is drive, dine, fly. The PM tour is fly, dine, drive. Hotel pickup is not included, so you make your own way to the check-in desk at Blue Hawaiian Helicopters, 1 Lelepio Pl in Kahului, and a $24 fee is payable there. Weight restrictions apply to the flight and are worth reading before you commit. Minimum age is 4.

The day step by step

  1. Hana Highway - Road to Hana
Check-in is at Blue Hawaiian Helicopters in Kahului, then you board the air-conditioned limo-van for the guided drive east. Six passengers maximum, plush seats, large windows and a Hawaii State Certified driver/guide for the 3.5 hours of driving.
  2. Ke‘anae Point 20 min
Twenty minutes at Keanae, the Hawaiian village out on the lava peninsula below the taro fields. You get the old church, the black rock shoreline and the surf hitting it head on. Aunty Sandy's banana bread stand sits just off the highway after mile marker 16 if the schedule allows.
  3. Wai'anapanapa State Park 60 min
A full hour at Waianapanapa, with park admission included, which takes the reservation system off your hands. The small black sand beach sits below sea stacks, blow holes and a native hala forest, and the park is open daily 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  4. Upper Waikani Falls
The van stops at Upper Waikani Falls, the three-chute waterfall above the highway near Keanae. The swim break happens at a freshwater rainforest pool when conditions permit, and East Maui streams can rise fast after rain, so the guide makes that call on the day.
  5. Hana Highway - Road to Hana 45 min
Lunch is 45 minutes at a beachside spot, served on linen: Pacific Rim wraps of herb-marinated grilled chicken breast and lightly blackened 7-spice seared Ono, with fresh tropical fruit and ice-cold drinks. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free entrees are available on prior request.
  6. Hana
Hana village sits on its own at the far end of the highway, and the tour includes a guided visit to Hana Tropical Gardens covering the native Hawaiian people, their culture and the land. The 36-minute Eco-Star flight with live commentary runs over the coastline and the rainforest, after lunch on the AM tour and before the drive on the PM tour.

How this helicopter tour compares with the other Road to Hana tours

The flight-only option lasts 1 h 15 min and leaves the highway out altogether, which works if you have half a day already committed elsewhere. The 10-hour Small-Group Road to Hana Luxury Tour and the 8–10 hour private VIP tour spend far longer on the ground, with more stops and longer stops, and no flight. Take this page's tour if you want both halves and are content with 3.5 hours of driving rather than a full day of it.
