What this private Road to Hana tour includes
The day runs 8 to 10 hours and starts from $599 per booking, which covers the vehicle and the driver-guide for your group alone. Pickup is door to door anywhere on Maui, cruise passengers included, and the operator suggests a 9:00 a.m. start, with start and finish times open to change. Snacks, soda and bottled water travel with you. Meals are not included, so budget for lunch in Hana town or back in Paia.
The road sets the length of the day. The Hana Highway covers 64.4 miles between Kahului and Hana with 620 curves and 59 bridges, 46 of them a single lane wide where oncoming traffic takes turns, and Hawaii's tourism authority puts the one-way drive at two to four hours. That same official tourism page encourages visitors to see the road on a permitted guided tour instead of driving it themselves, and a vehicle booked for your group alone gives that the loosest timetable: skip a stop, add a swim, or sit at Ke'anae longer than a fixed schedule would allow.
Twelve stops are listed, from the plantation town of Paia to the turtles at Ho'okipa Beach Park in the evening. Water features in two of them, an hour at Venus Pool and 45 minutes at Wai'anapanapa, so pack a swimsuit, a towel and sturdy shoes; the park service highly recommends hiking shoes on this coast, and East Maui streams can rise as fast as 4 feet in 10 minutes after rain. Wai'anapanapa State Park opens 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily and requires reservations for both entry and parking, which do not appear on this listing's inclusions, so confirm with the operator how that is handled before you fix a date.
Your group alone, 12 stops, 8 to 10 hours
Pickup and drop-off anywhere on Maui, cruise arrivals included, with snacks, soda and bottled water on board. Dates fill first in the summer months.
Paia30 min Paia sits on the North Shore and grew up as a plantation town, with the Paia Store opening in 1896 to serve the multicultural workforce of the Paia Sugar Mill. Half an hour is enough for coffee and a walk down the main street before the curves start.
Ke'anae Arboretum45 min A paved walkway of 0.6 miles runs beside Pi'ina'au Stream, past terraces that ancient Hawaiians built for growing taro, a staple of their diet. More than 150 kinds of tropical plants grow here, many of them labelled, including the streaked bark of rainbow eucalyptus.
Ke‘anae Point30 min The Ke'anae Peninsula pushes half a mile out from the cliff line of the Hana Highway, a finger of young lava from a flow off Haleakala. The village has farmed taro for centuries and much of the flat land is still taro lo'i; the soil for it was carried down basket by basket.
Pua'a Ka'a State Park30 min Pua'a Ka'a State Wayside covers 5.0 acres of rainforest with small waterfalls and pools, bamboo and heavy ferns. It is one of the legal parking and restroom stops along the highway, which counts for something on a day this long.
Wai'anapanapa State Park45 min The sand in the cove at Wai'anapanapa is black because the volcanic rock erodes into it, and hala forest, sea stacks and blow holes sit above the beach. The park runs 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., reservations are required for entry and parking, and visitors must be inside by 5:30 p.m.
Upper Waikani Falls15 min Upper Waikani Falls, known as the Three Bears, drops in three strands into one pool below the road. Fifteen minutes is the whole stop, enough for photographs from the roadside.
Hana Gold30 min Hana Gold is a family-run cacao plantation that grows its beans and makes the chocolate on site. The visit is a guided walk through the cacao trees, an explanation of how the chocolate is made, and samples at the end.
Hana60 min Hana town has 782 residents, a handful of shops and somewhere to eat. An hour covers lunch and a loop on foot, which is the point of the stop, since meals are not included in the price.
Koki Beach30 min Koki Beach has red and black sand and open surf breaking close in. Thirty minutes for the coastline and the colour of the sand, with waves worth watching when conditions line up.
Venus Pool (Waioka Pond)60 min Venus Pool, locally Waioka Pond, is where fresh water meets the ocean, so you can be in both at once. Locals cliff dive here and you can watch or join in. An hour is set aside, so bring a swimsuit; whether anyone swims comes down to the water that day.
Wailua Falls30 min Wailua Falls drops 80 feet into a pool in the greenery south of Hana, close enough to the highway that the viewing is from the roadside. Half an hour is plenty here.
Ho'okipa Beach Park30 min Ho'okipa Beach Park comes at the end of the day, when Hawaiian green sea turtles, honu, often haul out on the sand to rest. They are protected by federal and state law, so keep a respectful distance and never walk between a turtle and the water.

Other private day trips compared
Four other private days are listed below for comparison. The Jeep trip at 8 hours from $349 is built around walking to waterfalls, so it asks more of your legs; the 8-hour day from $299 concentrates on the black sand beach, waterfalls and sea turtles. The 9.5-hour day from $575 and the 8-hour day from $400 are closest in shape to the tour on this page. Compare them on hours, pickup and what is included before you fix a date.

Maui: VIP Private Road to Hana Tour with Pick Up (this page)
The $599 is the price for the whole booking rather than a per-seat fare, so the cost per person falls as your group grows. Pickup address and the 9:00 a.m. start are set when you book.
