What this Road to Hana guided tour includes

The route is Hawaii Routes 36 and 360, the 64.4-mile stretch between Kahului and Hana. Hawaii's tourism authority counts 620 curves and 59 bridges, 46 of them one lane wide where oncoming traffic takes turns, and puts the one-way drive at two to four hours. The same official tourism page encourages visitors to see the road on a permitted guided tour instead of driving it themselves. Those numbers are why the day here fills 9 to 11 hours.

Pickup is at your hotel in a 2023/2024/2025 Mercedes Sprinter van, with a window between 5:50 and 6:30 a.m. If you would rather meet the group, the central point is outside Starbucks in the Target shopping centre at 120 Ho'okele St, Kahului. A local driver/guide drives and narrates in English, which means nobody in your party spends the morning reading the next blind bridge.

Waianapanapa State Park admission and parking fees are in the price. That is the practical reason to take this one: the park requires reservations for both entry and parking, they are released 30 days ahead one day at a time at midnight Hawaii Standard Time, and there are no same-day slots.

Food is handled too. Lunch is a plate from Hana Farms, and breakfast bars, snack bars, Hawaiian gluten-free chips, bottled water and other drinks are in the van through the day. Coffee, extra food and banana bread at the farm stands you buy yourself, and the operator suggests gratuities of 15 to 20%.

What the day looks like, stop by stop

  1. Paia
The day begins in Paia, a former sugar plantation town of low storefronts and surf shops at the Kahului end of the highway. It is the traditional starting point for tours along this road.
  2. Ho'okipa Beach Park 15 min
Ho'okipa sits just east of Paia and is where windsurfers work the trade winds. Hawaiian green sea turtles come up onto the sand here, often in numbers. Fifteen minutes.
  3. Twin Falls
Twin Falls at mile marker 2 is the first waterfall stop of the morning; its gates open at 7:10 a.m. and the 55 parking spots go first-come. After heavy rain the rock walls along the highway run with water as well, which is a good sign for the falls further on.
  4. Rainbow eucalyptus near mile marker 7
Rainbow eucalyptus grow beside the highway near mile marker 7, their bark peeling in strips of green, orange, red, purple and yellow. You see them from the van window as the road climbs into the rainforest.
  5. Na'ili'ili-Haele bamboo
Near mile marker 6.7 the bamboo stands close to the road, dense and tall enough to turn the light green. This one you also see in passing from your seat.
  6. Ke‘anae Point 20 min
Keanae Peninsula is a half-mile finger of old lava pushed out into the Pacific, with taro fields still worked by local families and the Lanakila Ihiihi O Iehova O na Kaua church of 1860 standing on the flat. Aunty Sandy's banana bread stand is left off the highway just after mile marker 16, Monday to Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Twenty minutes.
  7. Three Bears Falls and Pua'a Ka'a 20 min
Waikane Falls, better known as Three Bears, drops in full view of the highway between mile markers 19 and 20. Puaa Kaa Falls at mile marker 22.5 sits inside Puaa Kaa State Wayside, five acres of small falls and pools with legal parking and restrooms. Swimming is at your own discretion, and streams in East Maui can rise four feet in ten minutes, so take the driver's word on the day.
  8. Wai'anapanapa State Park 20 min
Waianapanapa holds the black sand beach at Hana, along with sea stacks, blow holes, a natural stone arch, a native hala forest and the old Piilani coastal trail. The park runs 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily, and because admission and parking are included you walk straight in. Twenty minutes, swimming at your own discretion.
  9. Lunch from Hana Farms 45 min
The farm-to-table plate comes from Hana Farms at 2910 Hana Highway, past mile marker 31: BBQ beef, Hana Farms kalua pork, lemongrass ginger chicken, jackfruit chili or a salad combo plate. Forty-five minutes, sitting down.
  10. Hana
Hana town is 52 miles from Kahului by the tourism authority's reckoning, and it stays a village: a few shops, Kauiki Hill above the bay, houses among the trees. There is time to walk a little before the long drive back.

Staying in West Maui changes the maths: the Mercedes van day at $250 takes a maximum of 14 people and collects at Cannery Mall in Lahaina at 6:00 a.m., then Maalaea and Kahului Park & Ride. The $210 tour is the lowest starting price for the full route and picks up cruise passengers at Kahului Harbor at 8:30 a.m., while the 6-to-8-passenger tour costs more and carries fewer people, with a hot made-to-order Hawaiian BBQ plate lunch.
